The Strand station has been recently refurbished and is open to the public. Now installed with a modern refit, the Strand now offers a waiting lounge, ticketing counter, bag storage, bathroom facilities and cafe.

Strand station dates back to the 1930s when it was known as Auckland Railway Station. It was the main Auckland CBD station until Britomart was opened in 2003. These days, The Strand station is used exclusively for KiwiRail's Northern Explorer tourism service and Te Huia.

This historic building is now open 6 days a week (Monday-Saturday) until 6pm, with just the platform accessible off Ngaoho Place.

Important information for passengers

  • Please note Te Huia is not able to pick up passengers at Papakura for travel to Strand station, or take passengers to drop off in Papakura.
  • The train will arrive approximately 15 minutes prior to departure.
  • Strand station has newly reburbished facilities including a cafe, bathroom, ticketing and bag storage.
  • Strand is not a fully accessible station. There are a number of hazards that may pose a risk to passengers (listed below). Please consider these factors when choosing how to continue your journey from Strand station. An accessibility parking space and drop/off pick up area is available adjacent to the platform in the Ngaoho Place carpark.
    • Entry/exit required through a carpark with no separated pathway.
    • Carpark surface is uneven, with some uphill and downhill sections.
    • Tactile paving is not prevalent in the area and you will need to cross roads. 
    • Terrain walking into Auckland CBD is steep and hilly.

CAR | There is no long term parking available at Strand station. Paid public carparks are available nearby in Parnell. Please click here to find the most convenient park for youThere is a drop-off and pick-up zone directly adjacent to the platform.

WALK | The station is a 20 minute walk from Britomart, and a 10 minute walk from Parnell's main street.  

BIKE | There are no bike parking facilities available.

BUS | The 755 bus leaves from outside Strand towards the city centre every 30 minutes. There are several bus stops on surrounding streets that also have frequent services.

OTHER | Taxis and ride sharing apps Uber and Ola all serve Strand station.
